What is a therian?

A therian is a person who identifies as a non-human animal, either partially or wholly. This isn't a role-playing game or a costume; it's a deeply felt sense of connection and identity. Therianthropy is the term for this identity.

Here's some information to clarify:

  • Not Furries: While there's overlap in artistic expression and community spaces, being a therian is distinct from being a furry. Furries enjoy anthropomorphic animal characters, while therians experience a deeper, more personal connection to a specific animal, often feeling a kinship or even a past life connection.

  • Wide Range of Experiences: The experience of being a therian is highly individual. Some might feel a strong instinctual connection, experiencing behaviors or sensory perceptions associated with their animal. Others might identify with the animal's personality traits, or feel a spiritual connection. There's no single "right" way to be a therian.

  • Animal Connection: The animal a therian identifies with can be anything from a common house cat to a mythical creature. There's no limitation on species.

  • Not a Mental Illness: Therianthropy is not currently classified as a mental illness by mainstream psychological organizations. However, it's important for therians to seek support if their identity causes them distress or interferes with their daily life. This is true for any strong identity, not unique to therianthropy.

  • Community: A supportive online community exists for therians, providing a space for sharing experiences, connecting with others, and finding understanding.

  • Expression: Therians express their identity in various ways, from wearing animal-themed clothing to engaging in activities associated with their animal. Some might adopt certain mannerisms or diets, though this isn't a requirement.

In short, being a therian is a complex and personal experience. It's about a deep-seated connection with an animal identity, and it's important to approach the subject with respect and understanding.
