What is a therian?

A therian is someone who identifies as a non-human animal, either partially or entirely. This identification is not a choice or a belief, but rather an intrinsic sense of self. It's important to note that being a therian is not the same as identifying with an animal, enjoying animals, or simply feeling connected to them. It's a deeper, more fundamental sense of being that animal.

Key aspects of therianthropy include:

  • Theriotype: This refers to the specific animal a therian identifies as. It could be any animal, real or extinct, such as a wolf, cat, dragon, or even a dinosaur.

  • Shifting: Many therians experience shifts, which are temporary changes in their mental, emotional, or even physical (phantom shifts) experience that align with their theriotype. These can include mental shifts (changes in thought patterns and behavior), phantom shifts (sensing phantom limbs or features), and dream shifts (experiencing their theriotype in dreams).

  • Awakening: This is the process of realizing and accepting one's therian identity. It can be a gradual process of discovery and self-understanding. There is not a single awakening experience.

  • Community: Many therians find support and understanding within online communities. These communities provide a space for sharing experiences, learning about therianthropy, and connecting with others who share similar identities.

It is crucial to understand that therianthropy is a valid identity and that therians are not mentally ill or delusional. It's a complex and personal experience that deserves respect and understanding.
